Creating a Personal Web Page

Updated Nov 27, 1996
If you have an account on the Twin Cities Free-Net, you can create a personal Web page. For now, it takes a bit of knowledge of HTML. We hope to make the process easier in the future.

Here's how you do it:

  1. Within your home directory on the Free-Net, there is a subdirectory named work, and within that another subdirectory named www. (If you don't know how to get to your directory, here are some instructions.)
  2. Create an HTML file named top.html in your work/www directory.
  3. Make sure the permissions on your HTML file are set to make it publicly readable.

That's it! Within 24 hours, a link to your page will be added automatically to the People list. Your URL will be:

http://freenet.msp.mn.us/people/yourname/
(where yourname is your user ID.)

You can create additional HTML files in your work/www directory and link them to your main Web page, if you wish.

If you want to create a Web page but do not want it listed on the TCFN People page, give it a file name other than top.html. It will be accessible via the URL:

http://freenet.msp.mn.us/people/yourname/your_file_name.html

Note: If your work/www directory was previously empty, the files you create in it will not be available immediately via the Web. Your URL will be activated within 24 hours after you first create a file in your work/www directory.
